Childhood friends to be Initiated together at Lodge Newton Mearns No.1706

Two young men who have been friends since childhood are to be Initiated into Freemasonry at a special meeting of Lodge Newton Mearns No.1706 on Thursday 1 September.

Matthew Campbell, 21, and Ryan Ward, 22, grew up together in Newton Mearns where their families have strong connections with the local Lodge. – Matthew’s father Bro. John Campbell is currently Inner Guard.

Both boys went to Kirkhill Primary School and then Mearns Castle High and played in the same school football teams.

They both went to Strathclyde University and have just completed their fourth year of Bachelor of Engineering degrees – Matthew in Mechanical and Ryan in Electrical and Mechanical.

Ryan spent his last year studying in Louisiana in the USA and Matthew is doing his next Semester in Stuttgart.

They spent a month touring the USA this summer, from Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina though to Nevada and California.

RWM of Lodge Newton Mearns, Bro. Tom Edgar, said: “Because of their studies taking them abroad it was difficult to arrange a date for their Initiation – especially since they wanted to join the Craft at the same time.

“Eventually we had to get permission to hold an extra meeting on 1 September so that we could accommodate their wishes.

“It will be a great pleasure to welcome these two upstanding gentlemen as members of Lodge Newton Means and I would like to invite visiting Brethren to join us to make it a night to remember for Matthew and Ryan.”
