Banner Bright at 307

The unveiling of a new lodge Banner heralded a very special evening for the Brethren of Lodge Union & Crown No. 307 in Barrhead on Tuesday, 20th December.

Not only was the new Banner ceremonially consecrated and dedicated, Grand Honours were bestowed on Lodge Secretary, Bro. James Miller PM, who also received his Jubilee certificate with a similar 50-year certificate awarded to Tyler, Bro. James Laing.

Earlier, RWM Bro. George McGrandles welcomed a Deputation from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire East headed by PGM Bro. John S. Miller.

Thereafter two Entered Apprentices were passed to the Second Square by the 307 Degree Team in the usual exemplary style.

The impressive and colourful new Banner was carried into the crowded temple by Standard Bearer Bro. Billy Petrie accompanied by a stirring tune from Piper, Bro Johnny Gauld.

The solemn ceremony of consecration and dedication was carried out by PG Chaplain Bro. Rev. Robert Craig.

WSW Bro. Nicol Hynd gave the Brethren a fascinating insight into the known history of the previous banner which the new version faithfully copied, admitting that no-one knew for sure the significance of the dove with the ear of corn!

PGM Bro, John S. Miller told the Brethren that the new Banner was much more than a piece of cloth decorated with the emblems of the Lodge – it represented the Lodge’s proud history and achievements over its near 193-year history and, Importantly, it represented its future.

He added: “The new Banner will serve as a focal point in the Lodge, representing the dignity and honour of not just the Brethren of today, but all those who have gone before whose contributions to this Lodge and Freemasonry in general are a great source of pride to the Brethren of Lodge Union & Crown.”

The meeting concluded with Bro. James Miller PM being presented with his certificate as Honorary Grand Architect for services to the Craft and also his 50-year certificate. A similar Jubilee certificate was then presented by the PGM to Bro. James Laing.
